Our Funeral Home History
In the 1920s, Morris N. Nilsen Sr. began the Nilsen Funeral Car Service. His son, Morris A. Nilsen, joined the company a few years later and together they served the Minneapolis/St. Paul area, providing transportation and personnel for area funeral homes.
Morris Nilsen Funeral Chapel was established in 1958 to serve the needs of the rapidly growing communities of Richfield, Bloomington, Edina, and South Minneapolis. Father and son opened the chapel at 66th Street and Portland Avenue South, in an area that had been mainly farmland only a decade earlier.
The chapel has continued to grow with the community, building significant additions in 1969, 1985, and 1987. Today, Morris Nilsen Funeral Chapel has two full-size chapels, two secondary chapels, and ample space for families, friends, and visitors.
We are privileged to serve families from throughout the Twin Cities metro area, with convenient access from most anywhere. We are less than 10 minutes from Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport and downtown Minneapolis, and approximately 5 to 7 minutes from Fort Snelling National Cemetery.
Now and into the future, Morris Nilsen Funeral Chapel will continue to help families commemorate the unique and special lives of their loved ones.
