Lowell Jungers - Morris Nilsen Funeral Chapel

October 8, 1953 - December 25, 2014

Lowell James Jungers was born in Sioux Falls, SD. on October 8, 1953 to Walter and Anna Maye. He was the third of 8 children. The family moved to Richfield, when Lowell was a baby. Through Lowell’s early years, he attended the Church of St. Richard and School where he formed very strong friendships. He attended Richfield High School, the class of ’72. As a very active student, Lowell played varsity basketball and baseball. High school is where he met Gail. They knew from the start that they would be together. Following high school, Lowell enlisted in the Air Force, with the plan to become an air traffic controller. After training in Texas and Mississippi he was stationed at Wurtsmith AF Base in Oscoda, Michigan. Lowell and Gail married on June 7, 1975, starting their life together in Michigan. Moving back to the Minneapolis area in 1977, Lowell went back to school before being hired by the FAA to work as an air traffic controller. In 1981, his first child, Ross was born, followed by Alane in 1982. Oh, how he loved his children.

Lowell was very involved in the Prior Lake, MN community as a coach and director of the city's baseball/softball program, for 8 years. He was the Assistant Cubmaster for Troop 331 and also volunteered at the Wacouta District. He loved playing cards. He played pinochle, 500, cribbage and other card games with anyone that would pick up a card but most recently, residents in the local retirement communities. Lowell also helped organize all-class reunions for his grade school (St. Richards) and high school (Richfield class of 1972). His emphasis was always on developing relationships and community strength.

Lowell had been battling disease for more than a decade. He survived a bone marrow/stem cell transplant, having his brother Mark as his donor, as the treatment against Mantle Cell Lymphoma. He had been living with congestive heart failure since 2006. He died peacefully surrounded by his wife and two children at 9:41 AM on Christmas morning.

His marriage of 39 years was filled with love, unconditionally. They were together always. He and Gail loved gardening, visiting various estate sales, traveling by car across the United States and spending time with their dogs (which had to be small and black females). Family always came first. He loved playing with, reading to, teaching, and loving his grandchildren. He taught the importance of relationships, loyalty, and hard work to everyone who entered his life.

Lowell is survived by his wife Gail; son Ross, wife Anna, and their children Linnea and Jace; daughter Alane, husband Derrick Madsen, and their children Lindsey and Ben; siblings, Linda Jungers/Peter Tunison, Mark/Jill Jungers, Valerie/Lowell Kuhlman, Sharon/Ron Young, David Jungers/Julie Confeld, Timothy Jungers/Kim Hand, Laura Beth Spande and Debbie Jungers; 17 nieces and nephews; godchildren Jenny Mills and Michael Jungers; other relatives and many very special friends. Preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Anna Maye Jungers.

I was taking care of Linda and Mark when Lowell was born-took a week off school(I was a Jr in high school) so Lowell was special. Our condolences to the family.

  2. Laura (Betsy) Jungers Spande says:

It’s difficult to believe that my brother, Lowell has passed away and even more difficult for me to talk/write about it but here goes….

My mother nicknamed him Sunshine because he was so happy and shining all the time.
Always had a smile and a joke or funny phrase. I enjoyed watching him play high school baseball and basketball. He was the kindest and most generous person I know. Knew where to find the best buys for everything! Helped me several times going online at Craig’s List to find tires for my car and for my sons. Suggested the best place for car repairs (Dan Pieper in Prior Lake) and for car insurance (AAA Dan Trost in Burnsville/Apple Valley).

Many thanks to my brother, Mark who was Lowell’s transplant donor. We can’t thank you enough!

But you can’t remember Lowell without his wife, Gail. After his stem cell transplant I remember being at family functions and being really annoyed with her for keeping such a close eye on his diet.
I thought she was so terrible for not letting him eat the foods he wanted. Boy, was I so wrong…she is the reason we all had him for 10 more years!! Thank you, Gail!
