David Frans Hiivala - Morris Nilsen Funeral Chapel

David Frans Hiivala age 89, died February 28, 2023, with family by his side. He was born October 15, 1933, in Minneapolis, MN to Emma Katherine (Niska) and Arthur Uno Hiivala. After serving in the Navy, he was united in marriage to Carol McCullen in March 1955.

Preceded in death by parents, Emma and Arthur Hiivala; brothers, Daniel Lee, Byron “Bud” Hiivala; sisters, Joan Hiivala, Mary Lipe. Survived by wife, Carol McCullen; children, Terrance Hiivala, Jodi (Jere) Weyrauch, Todd E. Hiivala; grandchildren, Jesse (Tracy) Weyrauch, Jeffery (Kristina) Weyrauch, Jake (Anna) Weyrauch, Linsey Potter, Cory (Amanda) Hiivala, Brynn Hiivala, Todd L. (Robyn Tenner) Hiivala, Alyssa (Steven) Bergeron, Angelica (Chris Bushey) Hiivala; great-grandchildren, Sophia, Ava, Camden, Aizlyn, Easton, Loah, Eli, Naomi, Annaleigh, Ashlynn, Aurora, Logan, Griffin, Anna, Stevie, Maegen, CJ, Gunnar.

David had a great fondness for automobiles, and it is estimated he purchased and sold over 100 cars during his lifetime. He also was very fond of planes from a young age and would ride his bike to the viewing area to watch planes land at the Minneapolis airport. After he retired from his job at the IRS, he went to work for Northwest and Delta Airlines to be closer to the planes that had intrigued him as a youngster.

David enjoyed the company of his many Christian friends and thoroughly enjoyed gatherings and visits where he had the opportunity to share many stories and memories of friends and relatives.

A visitation will be held on Sunday, March 12th, at Old Apostolic Lutheran Church, 5617 Rowland Road, Minnetonka from 4-6 PM. A funeral service will be held on Monday, March 13th, at Old Apostolic Lutheran Church at 11 AM, with a visitation one hour prior. A gathering will immediately follow the funeral service, at the church. A short military service will follow at Fort Snelling National Cemetery at 1:30 PM. It is requested to gather at 1:15 PM in Assembly Area #4 in preparation.

    I remember when I was a little kid and my Uncle Dave would send letters and postcards from all his travels. It was very special to receive your own mail as a kid. I still have the cards and letters!
