September 17, 1932 - January 16, 2026
Eve Isabel Overby (Tutton)
Eve passed away peacefully at home on January 16, 2026. She was 93 years old. A Memorial Service will be held for Eve and her husband, Philip Gordon Overby, on April 18, 2026, at Central Lutheran Church in Minneapolis at 10:30 am.
Eve’s father was Philip Aubrey Tutton and her mother was Magnhild Astrid Tutton (Haugli). Eve was born September 17, 1932 in Pobla de Segur, Spain. Her early years were influenced by world events. Her father was stationed at the hydroelectric plant in Spain, but due to the political turmoil under Franco, sent his wife and children (Eve and brother John) to Magnhild's childhood home of Lillehammer, Norway. They then settled in Winchmore Hill outside of London where they would spend the war years.
Two frequently told stories were: First, that her father was part of “Operation Pluto.” Second, during a bombing raid she and John were in a window-boarded room when a doodlebug bomb exploded outside. The bomb shattered the windows, leaving them both on the floor covered in glass. Their mother dusted them off with the words, “Thank God, not a scratch” and said nothing more. Eve carried this unspoken resolve throughout her life. She also liked to share that she lost a tooth playing “grass hockey.”
Eve's father wanted her to join her Aunt Sara at Sara's hotel in Copenhagen, so Eve was sent to the Lausanne Hotel school in Switzerland to be trained in hotel management. Eve was not enthused and later enrolled at St Thomas’ Florence Nightingale School of Nursing in London. There under the training of the nuns, she found her vocation. To her last days, her time at Thomas’ was among what she cherished most.
Working as a traveling nurse at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Eve met her husband, Philip, during his pediatrics residency. They married in Lillehammer Norway on July 15, 1967 in a stave church at Maihaugen.
Eve and Philip then raised their family in Minneapolis. They were members of Central Lutheran Church for more than 50 years. Eve worked at Abbott Northwestern Hospital where she loved to care for patients and took great satisfaction in being a nurse. She had an enduring faith from her teen years on and credited her years in Bible Study Fellowship in the 1970s with allowing her to adapt to life in the US and form lifelong friendships. She enjoyed gardening, tennis, needlepoint, and most of all people. Very much an extrovert, Eve loved to laugh and was a devoted mother and wife. She welcomed neighborhood and international children into the home, where she and Philip sponsored dozens of international refugees and exchange students. Eve had a knack for relationships that never left her and a genuine love for those around her. Her most cherished legacies are her family, her nursing, friendships and her faith.
