September 14, 1933 - May 11, 2025
Philip Gordon Overby, age 91, of Minneapolis, MN died at home with his wife and family present on May 11, 2025.
Philip was born September 14, 1933. He was raised during the depression in Finley, North Dakota. At age 16, he and his identical twin brother Floyd attended St. Olaf College where he majored in Botany. After graduation Philip joined the US army in 1955 and was stationed in France where he was able to travel throughout Europe and the Middle East. He frequently credited this time in the army as a time to grow and learn about other people and the world.
Philip married Eve Isabel Tutton in Lillehammer, Norway in 1967. They raised their three children at 330 E Minnehaha in Minneapolis and have been members of Central Lutheran Church for more than 50 years. Philip was the catalyst for welcoming more than 30 international families and students into the Overby home, many of whom have become like family.
He attended Medical School at University of North Dakota and Northwestern University, followed by a Pediatrics Residency at Mayo and a Pediatric Neurology Fellowship at the University of Minnesota where he was later on faculty. He was an early member of the Nicollet Clinic Blaisdell office in South Minneapolis and dedicated his professional life as a Pediatrician to serving the less well off.
After retirement Philip took up painting, continued his lifelong interest in gardening, enjoyed his grandchildren, traveled with his cherished wife Eve and most recently lived at 7500 York. Philip was an understated, humble, faithful man who always expressed gratitude for his upbringing in North Dakota, and the life he lived with Eve and his family.
Preceded in death by son, Mark Overby; brothers: Floyd and Alph Overby; and parents: Alph and Josephine Overby (Simonson).
Survived by his wife, Eve Overby (Tutton); children, Philip (wife, Ioanna) Overby, and Martha Overby; grandson, Maxwell Pacieznik and his mother Anna Pacieznik; granddaughters, Isabel Overby, Maria Overby, and Eleanor Overby; and sister, Margaret Alberg.
A service for Philip is anticipated, but not currently scheduled.
We’re very saddened by the passing of Dr. Overby. I’ve often remembered the evening in 1975, our 1st day in Minnesota, when we( Hang 15 y.o, Phillip 14 y.o, Hau 12 y.o, Huy 11 y.o and Hien 8 y.o.) were picked up by Dr. Overby on his family’s Volvo station wagon. There are so many memories to be cherished over the last 50 years even though Life is in the way sometimes but My family is forever grateful and thankful for Dr. Overby and Mrs. Overby, Mark, Phillip and Martha.
We’re sending our deepest condolences, love and prayers.

A fine, gracious human being has left us. We may be pleased he is relieved of all suffering, but we admit a deep loss of his quiet strength. I will remember him in my days.
