A CHILD LOANED
“I’ll lend you for a little time a child of Mine,”
Said God.
“For you to love the while he lives, and mourn for when he’s dead.
It may be four or five years or twenty-two or three,
But will you keep him for a while and care for him for Me?”
“He will bring charms to gladden you, and should his stay be brief,
You will have his lovely memories as solace for your grief.
I cannot promise you he’ll stay, since all from earth return;
But there are joys to know down there I want this child to learn.
And from the folks who walk life’s lands, I have selected you.
Now, will you give him all your love?
Not think the labor vain?
Nor hate Me when the time does come to take him back again?”
I fancied that I heard them say:
“Dear Lord, we accept this son.
For all the joy Thy child shall bring,
The risk of grief we’ll run.
We’ll share with him in tenderness,
And love him while we may
And for the happiness, we’ll know,
Forever grateful stay.
And should Thy angel call for him much
Sooner than we planned,
We’ll brave the bitter grief that comes,
And give to You his hand
