Irene Antoinette Johnson (nee Berg)

December 20, 1926 - December 1, 2023

Johnson, Irene Antoinette (nee Berg) passed away December 1st , 2023, at The Lutheran Home in Arlington Heights, IL. Born December 20th, 1926, to Albert and Alice (nee Oelschlegel) Berg in Minneapolis, MN.

As a much beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother, her steadfast love and support will be dearly missed.

Irene grew up in South Minneapolis with mother, father, sister and favorite dog, Putzin. She liked to ice skate after school and was fortunate to make deliveries for her uncle’s grocery store during the depression. In high school and college she made friendships that lasted their lifetimes.

A graduate of the University of Minnesota Nursing School, Irene served as a nurse in the United States Air Force. There she met and eventually married a handsome pilot, Robert. Together they raised four children and established enduring friendships at Air Force Bases in Greenland, San Antonio, Charleston and Cape Cod.

Settling in Arlington Heights, Illinois in 1967, Irene returned to nursing part-time at a Lutheran hospital while tending full-time to the needs of the family. Irene’s passions included photography, reading, education, games and puzzles. She loved Lawrence Welk, reading Peanuts and watching The Waltons. She was an early adopter of the technical marvels that were born in her lifetime. Grandchildren may have had some influence in driving the early VCR and Nintendo purchases and certainly motivated her Facebook presence.

Irene’s life was grounded in Christian faith, from which her work ethic & loving care of family flowed generously. As a child of God, Irene was ever grateful of the many blessings bestowed upon her, most especially her family. Irene is preceded in death by her husband, Robert Wallace Johnson; her sister, Carol (late Bill) Haugen; and by her parents. Irene is survived by children, Meredith Lorenzen, Barbara (Wesley) Pomeroy, Joan (Alan) Ahr, Christopher (Kelly) Johnson; her grandchildren, Erik (Emily) Johnson, Brittney (Eric) Stoerger, Janna (Mike) Armstrong, Karen (Joe) Born, Lauren Pomeroy and Chelsea (Kyle) Gilbert, Todd (Laura) DeWenter, Leah DeWenter, and Paul DeWenter; by 14 great-grandchildren; and her sister Carol’s children and their families.
